Find Your Why Then You Can Find Your How

Updated: Dec 7, 2020

Feeling like giving up on your business? When was the last time you thought about your 'why'?

At DesCPA, we’re committed to helping entrepreneurs be successful, but we can’t cast your vision for you. We can only help you run with it.

The late, great ‘Black Panther’ actor Chadwick Boseman said “Purpose crosses disciplines.” Purpose is something that should permeate from your business because it should be the core.

I always ask potential clients, ‘What is your why?’ What do you hope to get out of it? What is your purpose?’ It has to be bigger than just making money. Your business should be driven by purpose because when it’s your purpose you’re going to be committed to the process. If you believe in yourself and are committed to a process, then you can be successful.

Your why should be bigger than just not wanting to have a boss or getting rich. It should be about building a legacy.

According to Forbes, 19th-century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “He who has a why can endure any how.”

Do you really want to help the community? Do you want to create jobs, build a legacy for your family, build generational wealth, or provide a much-needed service for others? These are all great whys.

Once you’ve determined your why, then you can get to your how and for every business that may look different. Don’t become a cookie-cutter copy of other businesses in your industry. Find out what makes you unique.

Launching a business takes guts and entrepreneurship isn’t as glamorous as it seems, but it’s extremely rewarding when you’re in it for the right reasons.

The best part is: You don’t have to go at it alone. If you read our blog about having a winning mindset, you’ll know being open to collaboration is one of the ways to do that.

For example, if you’re a candlemaker and you want to find the right scent to help people feel calm and at peace, you could collaborate with an aromachologist to help you find the best blend. You both win if the candle sells out.

Your why was helping bring people peace during a tumultuous time. Your how was collaborating with an expert to make a candle to help achieve that. So even if the process was tedious, you committed to it because you thought it was worth it.

The same concept applies to any business.

Do some soul-searching and figure out your why. And once you do that, you’re one step closer to success.
